Overseas Market Report

US sharemarkets were flat to firmer on Friday. The Dow Jones index finished higher by 18 points or 0.1%. The S&P 500 index was flat and the Nasdaq gained 4 points or 0.1%. Over the week the Dow fell 1.1% but the Nasdaq gained 0.7%. Over the month the Dow gained 1.9% and rose 9% over the quarter. The Nasdaq fell0.8% in the month but rose 7.1% in the quarter.

Global oil prices rose by over 1% on Friday with Brent crude at 4-year highs. The on-going concern is US sanctions against Iran to take force on November 4. Brent crude rose by US$1.00 or 1.2% to US$82.72 a barrel and the US Nymex price rose by US$1.13 or 1.6% to US$73.25 a barrel. Over the week Brent rose by US$3.92 or 5% and Nymex rose by US$2.47 or 3.5%

Base metal prices rose on the London Metals Exchange on Friday. Zinc rose by 5.2%, but tin rose just 0.1%. Over the week metals fell by up to 5% with nickel down the most. Other metals fell up to 1.8% but zinc bucked the trend, up by 6.4%.

The gold futures price rose by US$8.80 an ounce or 0.7% to $1,196.20 an ounce. The spot gold price was trading near US$1,192 an ounce in late US trade. Over the week gold fell by US$5.10 an ounce or 0.4%. Iron ore rose by US30 cents or 0.4% toUS$69.50 a tonne and rose the same over the week.

Australian Market Report

Friday 28th September - close. The Australian share market has closed higher after investors' worst fears over the banking royal commission's interim report were unfounded. The benchmark S&P/ASX200 index was up 26.4 points, or 0.43 per cent, at 6207.6 points on Friday, while the broader All Ordinaries index was 26.2 points, or 0.42 per cent, higher at 6325.5 points.
